The Misconception About Doulas: We Don't Hold Babies Much, But When We Do, It's Pure Heaven

Hey everyone!

I wanted to clear up a common misconception about being a doula. Many people think that as doulas, we spend a lot of time holding babies. The reality, though, is that most of our work involves supporting the birthing person and their family before, during, and after labor—not snuggling newborns. But let me tell you, those rare moments when I do get to hold a baby are absolutely heavenly!

The Role of a Doula

Being a doula is all about providing emotional, physical, and informational support to the birthing person. We're there to hold hands, offer encouragement, and provide comfort measures like massage or breathing techniques. We help create a calm and supportive environment, advocate for the birthing person's wishes, and offer reassurance during the ups and downs of labor.

Most of the time, we're focused on the birthing person, making sure they feel heard, respected, and empowered. We're there to support the partner or other family members too, helping them feel involved and confident in their roles. The baby, when they arrive, is typically in the loving arms of their parents, which is exactly where they should be.

When Holding a Baby is Pure Heaven

However, there are those special moments when I do get to hold a newborn, and it's pure magic. Holding a baby I've just witnessed entering the world is an indescribable feeling. It's a moment filled with awe and love, knowing I was a part of their birth journey. These moments are rare, but they are incredibly precious.

I remember one particular birth where, after hours of supporting a laboring person, the baby finally arrived. The room was filled with joy and relief. After the initial bonding time with their parents, I had the honor of holding the baby for a few minutes. Looking into those tiny, new eyes and feeling their warmth was an experience I'll never forget. It was a reminder of the incredible journey I'd just witnessed and the miracle of life itself.

The Heart of the Matter

So, while I may not hold babies often, when I do, it's a moment of pure heaven. Those rare moments remind me of why I love being a doula and the incredible journey of birth that I am honored to support. To all the families I've worked with and those I'll support in the future, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your birth story.

With love and gratitude,

Jill
